Why making a book ?

I’ve been keeping a sketchbook for 13 years now. That is a lot of sketchbooks ! A lot of heart and time spent sketching. For the past 4 years I’ve been scanning and keeping track of these into a monthly PDF to my Patreon. I have now over 200 pages of scanned sketchbook ready to be made into an actual paper book. I’ve always loved to peek into other artists’s sketchbooks. It’s sometimes quite different from what you see in their finished artworks. It’s also these incredible behind-the-scenes pieces that shows the inside of the artist. And it’s only natural that I share that in return.

Pourquoi faire un livre ?

Je tiens des carnets de croquis depuis près de 13 ans maintenant. Ça fait beaucoup de carnets ! Beaucoup de temps et de cœur passé dans le dessin. Depuis les 4 dernières années, je scanne régulièrement ces carnets pour faire un PDF mensuel à mes soutiens sur Patreon. J’ai à présent plus de 200 pages de carnet de croquis prêtes à être compilées dans un vrai livre en papier. J’ai toujours adoré regarder les carnets des autres. C’est parfois très différent de ce qu’ils présentent dans leur œuvres finales. Ce sont aussi ces incroyables oeuvres produites en coulisses qui montrent ce qui fait un artiste.  Ca me semblait naturel de partager les miennes en retour

The books will cover a period of 4 years and reflect the inside of my actual sketchbook. I use my sketchbooks as ways to learn new things but also to reflect my state of mind. Inside you’ll find human characters research, personal project development, mind explorations, watercolor landscapes, travel notes and many more behind the scenes !

Le livre réunit une période de 4 ans et reflète l’intérieur de mon véritable carnet. J’utilise mes carnets pour apprendre de nouvelles choses, mais ils sont aussi le reflet de mon humeur. A l’intérieur vous trouverez : des recherches de personnages, du développement de projets personnels, des explorations mentales, des décors à l’aquarelle, des notes de voyages et bien plus de coulisses encore !

Why crowdfund it through Kickstarter ?

All the artworks are ready ! I just need to gather the funding to print the book. And this is why the crowdfunding campaign gets interesting. Since I don’t have the funds in my hand, I’m calling for your support. If you are interested in the book, you pre-order it on Kickstarter, the crowdfunding platform, and once the goal is met, the book comes true ! If not, you get your money back and the book project disappear forever ! The book will be 5.5″ by 5.5″ and around 200 pages perfect bound softcover with a 3D varnish on the cover. The inside commentary is both English and French.

Pourquoi financer en passant par Kickstarter ?

Tous les dessins sont prêts ! J’ai juste besoin de réunir les fonds pour imprimer le livre. Et c’est là que la campagne de financement participative prends son sens. Puisque je n’ai pas l’argent sous la main, j’en appelle à votre soutien. Si vous êtes intéressés par le livre, vous le précommandez sur Kickstarter, la plateforme de financement participatif, et si le but est atteint, le livre devient réalité ! Si le but n’est pas atteint, vous récupérez votre argent, et le projet du livre disparaît à jamais ! Le livre fera 14.5 x 14.5 cm et environ 200 pages, dos carré collé, couverture souple avec un verni sélectif. Les commentaires à l’intérieur sont en anglais et en français. 

I will not be putting all my sketchbook’s inside it though, I’m doing a selection of my sketchbooks from 2017 to 2021. There is a significant and interesting progression in these sketchbooks. In 2017 I started using watercolor seriously and doing lots of plein air sketching with it but also incorporating into my creations more and more. It’s also when I starter to be more precise into my art again, after a long period of simplification due to my wrist troubles. So it should be most interesting !

Cela dit je ne vais pas y mettre tous mes carnets, je fais une selection de carnets entre 2017 et 2021. Il y a une progression intéressante dans les réalisations présentes. En 2017 j’ai commencé à utiliser l’aquarelle plus sérieusement ainsi que faire beaucoup de croquis d’extérieur, mais aussi incorporer l’aquarelle de plus en plus souvent dans mes créations. C’est aussi quand j’ai commencé à être plus précise dans mon dessin à nouveau, après une longue période de simplification due a mes problèmes de poignets. Donc ça devrai être super intéressant !

Bonjour ! Il était temps que je mette a jour mon ancienne recette d’aquarelle maison. Cette fois-ci je fais la recette en Français. Je sais que ça m’a été souvent demandé : Comment je fais mon aquarelle à la maison ?

Beaucoup de mes peintures sont faites en partie avec des aquarelles que j’ai préparé moi-même. Cela fait maintenant plus de deux ans que je fais mes aquarelles à partir de pigments en réalisant mon liant maison. Les illustrations suivantes sont faites exclusivement avec les peintures que j’ai crées.

J’aime particulièrement ces peintures parce qu’elles sont très pigmentées et très agréables à utiliser. Bien sûr certaines ont des défauts, elles peuvent êtres trop sèches ou trop liquides. Mais actuellement j’ai réussi à affiner ma recette pour qu’elle soient parfaites le plus souvent possible. Aujourd’hui je vous partage ma recette et comment je fabrique mes aquarelles.

Qu’est ce que l’aquarelle ?

Comme toutes les peintures artistiques l’aquarelle est composé d’un liant et de pigments. Les pigments sont des colorants fait à bases de :

• roches et oxydes : les ocres, les terres, les pierres tel le lapis-lazuli.
• plantes : bleu de Lectoure, l’indigo.
• animaux : le rouge cochenille.
• composé synthétiques : les cadmium et les bleus de cobalt.

Le liant quant à lui est ré-activable à l’eau grace à un mélange de gomme arabique et de glycérine. La gomme arabique est la sève d’une espèce d’acacia que l’on trouve au moyen orient. C’est la base de l’aquarelle mais aussi de la gouache. Mais concentrons-nous sur la recette de l’aquarelle.

Ma recette de liant pour faire des aquarelles maison.

Quel est le matériel nécessaire à la fabrication de l’aquarelle ?

Voici la liste du matériel necessaire. Notez que j’utilise aussi un petit spray d’eau distillée pour garder la peinture humide pendant que je la meule. Ce n’est pas nécessaire mais incroyablement utile. De même qu’un peu de Patafix pour tenir la plaque de verre sur la table et éviter qu’elle bouge pendant le processus.

• Gomme arabique,
• Eau distillée,
• Glycérine végétale,
• Miel,
• Huile essentielle de clou de girofle,
• Molette a pigment,
• Plaque de verre abrasée,
• Couteaux de peintre,
• Des demis godets,
• Des seringues vides et propres avec un bouchon,
• Des récipients pour le mélange du liant.

Les ingredients du liant pour l’aquarelle

• 20 gr de gomme arabique,
• 40 gr eau distillée,
• 15 gr de glycérine végétale,
• 4 gr de miel,
• 6 gouttes d’huile essentielle de clou de girofle.

Notez que le miel est facultatif, vous pouvez vous en passez. Le miel sert à donner de la transparence a la peinture ainsi qu’une texture agréable. Vous pouvez aussi remplacer l’huile essentielle de clou de girofle par du vinaigre, mais personnellement je préfère grandement l’odeur du clou de girofle !

Avec ce liant comme base, je peux faire plusieurs couleurs.

La fabrication de l’aquarelle

Maintenant il ne manque plus qu’a mélanger les pigments avec la liant. Pour ce jaune j’ai pris :

• 6 gr d’ocre jaune,
• 6 gr de liant,
• 4 gouttes de glycérine végétale supplémentaire.

Pourquoi est ce que j’ai ajouté de la glycérine ? Trouver la recette idéale pour faire ses aquarelles maison est très compliqué. Chaque pigment réagit différemment et un liant ne conviendra pas parfaitement à tous les pigments. Par expérience, j’ai remarqué que les terres tel l’ocre avaient tendance à être plus seches. Pour contre-carrer ça, j’ajoute un peu plus de glycérine qui va rendre la peinture plus souple. Certains pigments demandent moins de glycérine tel le Turquoise de Cobalt qui a tendance à être plus moin sec. Seule l’expérience pourra dire comment ajuster tel ou tel pigment.

J’aimerai vous dire que j’ai trouvé la formule magique mais ce n’est pas le cas…

Maintenant le gros du travail reste a faire : Meuler !

Meuler les pigments sur la plaque prends entre 30 minutes et 1h en moyenne mais des fois je vais jusqu’à 1h30 ou 2h en fonction des pigments. Plus vous allez meuler plus la peinture sera fine. Certains pigments sont déjà très fins et d’autres moins. Pour savoir quel sera le résultat, je vous conseille de tester régulièrement votre peinture sur un bout de papier pour voir comment elle réagit. C’est comme ça que j’affine la peinture selon mes gouts.

J’aime certaines peintures avec un peu de grains, mais je préfère d’autres bien fines et douces. La aussi vos choix personnels permettront de fabriquer des peintures suivant vos envies !

Conserver son aquarelle faite maison.

La méthode la plus simple c’est de remplir des demis godets et de les laisser sécher. Vous aurez alors un équivalent de ce qui se trouve dans le commerce.

Pour ma part je fais des demis godet et je garde de la peinture fraiche dans des seringues. Les seringues agissent comme des tubes de peinture du commerce et gardent la peinture humide et souple comme au jour de la fabrication. Ca me sert à reremplir les godets qui sèchent pour faire des demi-godets généreux !

Today I have one exiting news to share with you : I’ve self published a new mini comic!

Yes, yes as you may know I love comics and I’ve been developing a cat witch universe : Magikitty. (Learn more about Magikitty in this article).

I originally created this mini comic during a 24h comic challenge, I tell more about that in the book but in a few words, the challenge was to create 12 pages in 24h. So here it is, not that I fully created it in 24h but most if it yes. I then took it and made it pretty in the next weeks to create this mini comic.

Why the self publishing road?

I like my independence, always and I love to make mini zines. Plus, let’s be honest, this kind of mini format wouldn’t suit any traditional publication house. So let’s keep the fun and the spontaneity! Because self publishing is also about that : spontaneity. Being able to have a small, cute and pretty comic made in a few month. That’s how I created the first Magikitty zine and I wanted this mini comic to be the same. Cute, pretty, and self published!

What is in the mini comic?

So the book itself is 24 pages, 12 for the comic and the rest is filled with little bonuses about the context of the comic and how I created it. I think it to be rather interesting for those who likes to see behind the scenes. I know it’s the kind of things I like to see anyway!

I have much to catch up with you all. But first let’s talk zine creation : Magikitty a cat witch story.

Last October was Inktober again. Inktober is a challenge that last during all the month of October and that pushes artist all over the world to draw in ink every day for a month. I truely love this challenge.

So this year of course, I took part again and created Magikitty, a cat witch story.

What is Magikitty?

Magikitty is the name of a potion shop owned by Kitty a black cat witch.

The story revolve around Kitty and two of her friend : Fluffy, a white cat, and Bunny a yellow cat. The three of them are all wizards and can do magic.

I spent the month of october creating their lives, their story and making them as they are and I’ve grown quite attached to them. So that’s why I decided to make the illustrations created into a little zine.

After the zine, the story continue !

Following the positive feedback that I’ve got for Magikitty’s zine and the cat witches, I’ve decided to expend a little bit the universe. I’m currently creating new stories and new art for this world. It’s all very exciting. I’ve always loved fantasy and magic.

Among my favorite reads of all time are of course Harry Potter, The lord of the rings and the less known Trilogy of Bartimeus. Both talking about wizardry and magic. So it’s quite great to dive into this genre myself and create characters with some magic in it!

I hope you will be excited as I am for this world I’m creating.

Starting this January I have decided to make special rewards for my Patreon. I’ll be painting and designing postcards every month. Following my Magikitty storyline, the postcard will be sent to the recipient with a little note from one of the character of the story : Fluffy.

This first postcard to be sent to my Patrons is from the Namla forest. A very dark and scary forest that hides shadows.

Let’s travel through cat wizards in 2021!

I hope you are well, summer has just ended but I have still been releasing some youtube videos that I recorded during my holidays in the mountains. I really like to share my experience through videos as well. You know it, that’s why this blog exists in the first place.

During the summer, I did numerous hikes and most times I tried to take my sketchbook and a little bit of paint to try to show on paper what I had in front of me. Plein air painting is an exercise I deeply enjoy. But when you got to carry a huge back pack for a two day’s hike, you better think minimalist!

That’s what I want to share with you today : my minimalist watercolor set for hiking and travels. In the hope that maybe it can be of inspiration to you when it happens to you too.

The minimalist watercolor set :

When you carry a big bag an when space and weight is limited you have to think minimalist. Even when it comes to watercolors. That is why I never take more than these items for outdoor paintings.

• An A5+ handmade watercolor sketchbook with Canson Montval 300gr paper.
• A pot of water that seals well so water don’t goes away
• My watercolor palette of handmade paints.
• A set of 3 brushes (I’ll talk a bit more about this later)
• A red col erase pencil and a graphite mechanical pencil with a 2B nib.

This minimalist watercolor set that I take for travels and hikes is roughly 50 grams which is really little. I weighted it all. The sketchbook is the biggest item to take and might be the most problematic. So far I have managed to take it with me every time, but I am tempted to try a smaller one. Do you have mini sketchbook you like that you can suggest me ?

What are my favorites brushes to take for hike and travel?

In my set I only take 3 brushes. The one above is my most recent acquisition. I treated myself to a very nice actual travel brush. It’s the kind of brush that you can fold safely into your pencil case. So it’s this very beautiful flat handcrafted brush by Leonard.

The two other are a medium size flat beveled brush and a small Winsor and Newton series 7 for details and finish.

I am very happy about the flexibility of this set. I really have everything I need to paint on location. Above are some of the painting I did during some of these hikes and outings.

Bonjour ! How are you ?

I am super proud to show you these very new stickers that I added to my Etsy shop : Girl’s stickers. And not just girly stickers, the idea behind those stickers is to show the wild nature and passion through feminine figures. Nature as you might know a very dear subject of mine. I always love to depict it at it best may it be through illustration or through outdoor paintings. I tried with this series to combine a bit of the lineless style I do for outdoor watercolor painting and my regular, colored inked illustrations.

It was a very nice project to work on. Your kind response to this series pushes me to continue the series for future girls!

Watercolor stickers from original artworks

The original artworks are also for sale for some of these. But, at the time when I write this post, two of them are already sold and on their way to their new home. Thank you so much! I was on a cloud of happiness while packing it. It is a true confirmation that lately I have been getting in the right direction with my art and with my watercolor illustrations.

The original artworks were hand painted with watercolor. It is a series that I started during the summer on a whim and kept doing for fun. I am so happy that it turned out in these watercolor stickers to feed a little my Etsy shop.

On my side I’ll happily stick them on my sketchbook. I deeply enjoy cover my sketchbook with all sort of stickers and these will have a spot for sur on my next one.

I am planning to add much more things to my shop in the upcoming weeks. Especially original artworks and with Inktober, that is IMtober coming up. I am planning to sell most of my original artworks from that challenge as well so keep an eye to my etsy shop.
